Analysis and Hazards of Neutral Wire Overcurrent

Excessive neutral wire current leads to aging of the neutral wire, posing a fire risk. This is mainly caused by the fundamental current generated by three-phase imbalance and harmonic currents from nonlinear loads. Current flowing through a conductor generates heat, which is proportional to the square of the current (12R). When the current reaches 1.5 times the phase current, the heat generated in the neutral wire can reach 2.25 times that of the phase wire! Furthermore, in typical power distribution systems (TN-C, TN-S), although there are overcurrent protection devices on the phase wires, there are none on the neutral wire. Excessive current will inevitably accelerate the aging of the neutral wire insulation, posing a safety hazard.
